Can Allah (swt) do everything?

Question:

My whole life as a Muslim, I was told Allah can do everything but there was never a proof like a Quranic passage or a hadith. Can you give me proof or verses? Like can He make a tree give fruits that cures cancers or a man give birth to a child? Can He do everything no matter how ridiculous and impossible it is for humans and reality? I am confused.

Answer:

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Surah Ma’idah, verse 17 (5:17) Allah (swt) says in translation:
For to Allah belongs the dominion of the Heavens and the Earth, and all that is between. He creates what He pleases. For Allah has power over all things.

Another translation for the last phrase is “And Allah is Able to do all things.”

Surah Tawba, verse 39 (9:39) the same phrase is repeated.

Surah Ya-Seen, verse 82 (36:82) Allah (swt) says in translation:
Verily, when He intends a thing, His Command is, “be”, and it is!”

These are just a few examples from Quran which show that indeed Allah (swt) can in fact do anything and everything as He wills. However, He does not do ‘ridiculous’ things, because He is All-Knowing and has not created the Heavens and Earth for play and folly. As humble servants of Allah (swt) we must know that His Will overrides everything in existence and His Will is the best! It is not our position to question.

And Allah and His Prophet know best.

Wa Salam.
