Inheritance Issue

Question:

Assalamoualaikoum,

My father rahemahoullah spent a lot of money on me. He did that not because he preferred me. He provided the others also with what they needed. The expenses however was huge for me. He died . My questions are:

Is it better to calculate the amount spent on me so that when I get my share, I give it back to them to inherit? Has the amount to be divided between my mother, brothers?

I ask because there is hadith stating one should give equally to his sons and daughters, the wife is not included. I know that there is difference between spend and give, but still i feel that I have been given a lot through what he spent on me. Will my father be happy with such act, will that be considered a good deed on behalf of my father?

JazakoumAllah khayr

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
Sayyidina Muhammad (saws) said, “Do justice among your sons,” and repeated it thrice. (Muslim, Ahmad, Abu Dawood)

If you feel that your father acted contrary to this instruction, you are more than welcome to “correct” his lapse the way you are proposing. You are free to distribute your portion as you like. Allah knows best.
