Hadith of Visit of Shaytan

Question:

Asalamu alaykum,

What is the authenticity of this hadith?

JazakumAllahu Khayran

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

The URL claims that this report is contained in Ibn `Arabi’s Shajarat al-Kawn but this is not true. It is not included in the two Arabic editions of Shajarat al-Kawn (1968 and 1985) nor did Maurice Gloton include it in his French translation of Shajarat al-Kawn. It is simply appended to that work in the 1968 edition without positive attribution to Ibn `Arabi (see below). Nor is the report itself authentic, nor does any chain exist for it. Nor is its English translation accurate asĀ it has changed several meanings. And the first blatant internal proof of its inauthenticity is that Iblis supposedly gives salams to the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) and the Companions, when he is the enemy of mankind and the enemy of the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) so he would never give salam, nor would Allah allow him to give salam since then he would receive ten or more rewards for it per person saluted as stated in the hadith: “Whoever says salam alaykum, ten good deeds will be recorded for him.”
