If the enemy raid you…

Question:

Assalamu alaikum,
I read this hadith however was not able to find any explanation. What does this hadith mean? How would Muslims go about following the hadith correctly? Can Muslims use this now for divine help?

I did a bit more research and found ‘Haa-Meem‘ is one of the names of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and is also at the beginning of Surahs 40-46. Would you be able to shed any light on this?

The Prophet (saws) said: “If the enemy raid you – then say ‘Haa-Meem‘ – they will not be Victorious.”

It’s chain is Saheeh – (Narrated by Ahmad [4/65, 377], at-Tirmidhi 1682, Abu Dawud 2597 and others. Authenticated by al-Haakim 2/107, Ibn Kathir said in his Tafsir 4/69 – ‘its chain is Sahih/authentic.’

Thank you in advance.

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,
The complete text is, “If the enemy raid you BY NIGHT, then say ‘Haa Meem,
they will not be victorious!'” because in surprise night raids the two armies mix, thus the leader gives the Muslims a slogan by which they can recognize one another; and the meaning of Haa Meem here is a Divine Name as if to say: By Allah they will never be victorious. This slogan was also used at Uhud when they were dispersed.
