Can a Muslim woman work?

Question:

The Last Prophet SAW let Khadijiah, Hafsah work. Many men mock the Prophet’s lifestyle by saying they lived in reverse roles and they use the excuse of forcing women not to work by using “treat women like queens” as a cover up excuse. I know women does not have to work, but if she wants to then isn’t it haram to hold her against her will? People said Muslim women shouldn’t work and said Khadijiah R.A. worked before Islam came and that doesn’t count. If that’s true, Muhammad SAWS didn’t tell her to quit her job after, right? Besides, now that there are more women than men, they should work more than ever. These days widows are growing and they live in poverty because they have kids and cant go to school to get a proper job, plus men dies early and an elderly women will be all alone.
