Mixed martial arts

Question:

Assalam walaikum,
I am pursuing a career in mixed martial arts fighting (for example the UFC). I would like to know if it is halal or haram since it allows kicking and punching to the head. Please refer the question to Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Qabbani if possible. Send him my love and salam.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Snything that harms a mu’min or harms a human being or harms an animal even, the Prophet (s) prohibited it. Even you cannot kill an animal if it doesn’t harm you, if it is harmless you have no right to kill it. Athough it is a career that you are training and the opponent is accepting, but this is also harming a body that Allah gave to  you and Allah doesn’t like harming what He owns. He owns you and He owns your soul. So if you are doing this for a duty, that is required from  you as in the army or security issues, to be trained then due to this kind of necessity, there is a principle in Islam, that al-darurat tubeh al -madhurat, the necessity of doing something, if it is haram, is is permitted out of necessity. On that principle, we can say yes but you must not use it to harm others.

That is one opinion. The other opinion is if you are not in need for it as a duty, there is no need to go in this way.
