Qibla in North America

Question:

As Salam O Aleykum
We are currently residing in Eastern Canada; Most of the mosques here face towards North East when praying whereas some other mosques recommend that Qibla in the south east direction.
On the internet there is a lot of information which proves either of the directions to be correct. Please advise on this subject, as to which direction should we be facing. thankyou
wa salams

Answer:

`Alaykum as-Salam,

Muslims are not tasked with individually knowing spherical trigonometry. Therefore trust in Allah Most High and pray in the direction of the imams and communities that you trust as best following and striving to fulfill the Divine directives of these two verses:

{Unto Allah belong the East and the West, and whithersoever you turn, there is Allah’s Countenance. Lo! Allah is All-Embracing, All-Knowing} Surat al-Baqara 2:115

{True piety does not consist in turning your faces towards the east or the west – but truly pious is he who believes in Allah, and the Last Day; and the angels, and revelation, and the Prophets; and spends his substance – however much he himself may cherish it – upon his near of kin, and the orphans, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and the beggars, and for the freeing of human beings from bondage; and is constant in prayer, and renders the purifying dues; and [truly pious are] they who keep their promises whenever they promise, and are patient in misfortune and hardship and in time of peril: it is they that have proved themselves true, and it is they, they who are conscious of Allah} Surat al-Baqara 2:177
