Missed fasts – How many fasts do make up?

Question:

Assalamu alaikum we rahmetullahi we barakatuhu,
I am a 20 year old girl, trying to understand how to do things. From dhikr, prayer, making up missed fasts to paying zakat etc. Everything makes me so confused, I forget things and I feel upset when I don’t understand when reading Q & A with Arabic words among other things. I mean, I first came across “fidya” today.

I have so many questions but I’ll start with my most recent wonder.

From last Ramadan I didn’t make up my 6 missed fasting-days. What should I do now? I don’t remember at what age I started fasting and I don’t know how many days I haven’t made up from previous Ramadans. Some Ramadans I didn’t have my menses so I fasted the entire month. What should I do? How do I know if my previous fasts are valid ?

Salam

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
You are to make up for the 6 missed fasting days after Ramadan as soon as possible. The days that you fasted before reaching puberty will be counted as your voluntary fast as you were not required to fast. For all previous Ramadans lapses and omissions you will make a sincere tawbah (repentance) and ask Allah for forgiveness.
