Question:
Is it permitted to hold a gathering to celebrate the completion of khatm of the Quran?
Answer:
Yes, in fact is sunnah of the Salaf (pious predecessors). Imam Bukhari said, “the du`a is mustajab at the khatm of Quran” and there is documentatoin to that effect in al-Qurtubi’s at-Tidhkar and an-Nawawi’s at-Tibyan. When Anas Ibn Malik, the Companion of the Prophet, used to complete the Qur’an reading, he gathered his family and supplicated (related by Abd Dawud). Hakam Ibn ‘Utaybah is reported to have said: ‘Once I was sent for by Mujahid and `Ubadah Ibn Abi Lubabah who said to me: We have invited you because we intend to finish the Qur’an, and the supplications at the time of finishing are answered.’ In another version they are reported to have said: ‘Mercy of God descends at the time of finishing the Qur’an.’
