Pay Sadaqah and circling above head

Question:

Assalam’mu’laikum Ya Mawlana,
We saw in our tradition, when we pay sadaqah we put our hand with that sadaqah circling above head . What does that mean? and What is our intention (niyyat) and any d’ua to be read during this act? How to do this act correctly?

Thanks for your answer. Shukran lillah.

Answer:

wa ‘alaykum salam,

To circle around yourself, on top, is awliyaullah‘s inspiration. Grandshaykh `Abdullah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q), may Allah bless his soul, used to tell us to circle over our heads or the heads of the people paying sadaqa, as if you are making a circle of protection or hifzh. So how far you circle is how far you will be protected by this sadaqa. So in your intention you circle the whole people that you are trying to include in that protection circle. What you read is to consider that this payment is for the love of Allah ,  love of the Prophet (s) and love of awliyaullah and love of those for whom you are giving that gift or sadaqa to.

Hadiyatan wasilatan ila hadrat an-Nabi, wa ila Mashayikhna al-kiram, sadaqata wa dafa` `an al-bala `anna wa ahlina wastawsan bi du`a al-khayr; or whatever du`a comes in your heart to do.
