What happens to ‘Ruh’, Soul of a person in comma?

Question:

Assalam o Alaikum wr wb

Salam to Honorable Mawlan Sheikh Nazim Adil, Sheikh Hisham Kabbani and other respectable mashaykhs.

I was just curious to know that we have heard so many times that a person goes into comma out of any medical reason, but I have always wondered what happens to the souls when a person goes into comma?Does the soul know its surrounding?can it see people?or is it in skies?where is it?what does it do?And also some people say that when a person dies with unfinished business his soul wanders on earth is that true from Islamic point of view?

JazakAllah

Answer:

Alaykum as-Salam,

In coma as in sleep, Allah Most High takes the souls and lets them see and go places until they return or until the person dies.

The last question in incorrect, since we know from Prophetic reports that the grave is either a Paradise or a pit of hell and that is the abode of the deceased until Resurrection. The Prophet (upon him blessings and peace) said:

The believer in his grave is in a lush garden and his grave is expanded to seventy arm-lengths for him with a light shining upon him like the full moon. Do you know what this verse was revealed about? {But he who turns away from remembrance of Me, his will be a distressful life, and We shall bring him blind to the assembly on the Day of Resurrection} (Q 20:124): the punishment of the unbeliever in his grave.(Musnad Abu Ya`la 11:521 §6644; a fair chain according to al-Haythami in Majma` al-Zawa’id 3:55)

And he said:

The grave is either a grove among the groves of Paradise or a pit among the pits of Gehenna.  (Sunan al-Tirmidhi)

At the same time the souls of the believers are allowed to roam where they please as we documented here and here.

May Allah Most High have mercy on us and grant us His uns here and in our graves as well as hereafter.
