Occupation of Prophets

Question:

Assalamu’alaykum wr. wb.

I am sorry for my stupid and inappropriate question.

What is the occupation of the Prophets in order they have to fulfill their own needs and for their family living? Why in their biography are not mentioned about that?

Thank you

Answer:

Wa `alaykum as-Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Traditional knowledge does indeed specify the vocations of the prophets – peace be upon them – though it is perhaps necessary to look to sources concerned with this subject rather than biographical stories. These sources are the books of futuwwah or chivalry, containing the traditions of the myriad artisanal guilds of Islamic civilization. Although the treasure-house that is his Seyahatname does not really belong to this genre, the traveler Evliya Celebi nevertheless includes in his account of Ottoman civilization an unrivalled description of the guilds of Constantinople. The following list (translated by Hammer-Purgstall) prefaces his description of the procession of the guilds that was included as an appendix to The Royal Book of Spiritual Chivalry:

…Adam was taught by the mediation of Gabriel to sow the earth with corn during his life-time, and all the prophets similar arts necessary for sustaining life…Adam was, as we are told, a peasant; Seth, a weaver; Edris (Enoch), a tailor; Noah, a joiner; Hud, a merchant; Saleh, a camel-driver; Abraham, a dairyman at Aleppo, and afterwards, when he built the Ka`bah, a mason; Ismail, a hunter; Ishak, before he grew blind, a shephard; Jacob, a speculative man; Joseph, in the prison, a watchmaker, and then a king; Job, a patient beggar; Shoaib (Jethro), a devotee; Moses, a shepherd; Aaron, vezir; Zilkefel, a baker; Jerjish (George), a sheikh; Loth, a chronographer; Kaffah, a gardener; Azir (Esdras) an ass-driver; Samuel, the companion of the seventy-two translators, an interpreter; Elias, a weaver; David, an armourer; Solomon, a basket-maker of the leaves of palm-trees; Zacharias, an eremite; John, a sheikh; Jeremias, a surgeon; Daniel, a fortuneteller by the art reml; Lokman, a philosopher; Jonas, a fisherman; Jesus, a traveller; and six hundred years after him, Mohammed, the last of the prophets, a merchant, and soldier in God’s ways…All these prophets having been taught their above-mentioned arts by Gabriel, communicated them to mankind, and became the Sheikhs and protectors of those arts.

It has also been related that the Holy Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – affirmed: “Every prophet has his vocation, and mine is the knightly struggle.” Here surely is an explanation why it is chivalry that encompasses all the other arts, in accordance with the function of the Seal of Prophets.

Your question is neither stupid nor inappropriate. Modern people have tragically lost the honor of following the examples of the prophets. This was the function of futuwwah in traditional Islam, to provide an operative link between worldly action and the spiritual hierarchy, and so justice would appear. Recently, Mawlana Sultan ul-awliya Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani – may Allah sanctify his secret – asked his followers: “Is there anyone here who knows handicraft? There are so many Pakistanis, Afghanis, Turks, Iranians, and Arabs who come here and they know handicrafts. I would like for them to arrange a small place for teaching those who do not know anything…They should teach them handicrafts, such as carpentry or shoe-making. There are several kinds of handicrafts, and perhaps you have people who know how to do something. Teach them carpentry; it will be like a golden chain for people.”

This last phrase provides a remarkable indication of the relationship between futuwwah and Sufism. “Golden chain” is a distinction belonging to Sufism, and therefore to the “greater mysteries” of spirituality; and while the crafts are concerned rather with the “lesser mysteries,” there is nevertheless a correspondence and “likeness” between the two domains of initiation. Often these forms of initiation converged; after all, futuwwah naturally belongs to Sufism, since the lesser depends upon the greater. Many of the seminal figures of Islamic esoterism supported the institutions of futuwwah, like the founder of the Suhrawardi order and the step-son of the Shaykh al-Akbar, may Allah sanctify their secrets. Lines of transmission within the Sufi orders include many whose names indicate an artisinal affiliation. Curiously, a futuwwah book of the weavers’ guild identifies Shah Naqshband – may Allah sanctify his secret – as having a principal role in preserving knowledge of the craft.

Just as futuwwah has been neglected, so has injustice become widespread. Knightly struggle is the vocation of the Last Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, yet as the Sultan al-Awliya has declared, “There can be no jihad until Imam Mehdi comes.” It should not be surprising, then, that the Seal of Futuwwah is none other than the one who is expected to fill the earth with justice as it has been filled with injustice.

Spiritual Connection with Shaykh

Question:

Salam,
I make a connection and have a visual of Shaykh in my heart. I am speaking and smth talking to the Shaykh. This does not happen every time i try to do and sometime it happen. Is this the correct way of rabitah to ask shaykh for solution of any prob? Can this be done with others representative of Shaykh Nazim? Please advice the method if I’m wrong.

I learn one method to link with our soul. We ask in our heart and our soul will answer YES(moving our head up down) and NO(moving our head left right). The head movement is not in our control(automatic). Is this pure way or wrong way influence by jinn? If wrong, how to remove this?

Some voices come to advice me sometimes to the heart, how and what is that? How can we differ the bad and good inspiration or voices?

Thank you.

Answer:

Wa`alaikumussalam,
Rabitah is only to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim. It is to establish a conscious connection between you and him to receive his support and guidance. Whatever inspiration that comes by that means shall be true. Your heart shall be at rest if a true signal comes, and it beats fast – sometimes furiously – if the matter is false. If in doubt, it is best to confirm it with his authorised deputy Shaykh Hisham Kabbani when you get the opportunity to meet him.

Regarding Backbiting 313

Question:

SALAM TO ALL
1 CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN IN WHICH CIRCUMSTANCES ARE WE ALLOWED TO TALK ABOUT SOMEBODY BEHIND THERE BACK
2 IF YOU HAVE BACKBIT-ED SOMEBODY WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? I KNOW YOU HAVE TO ASK FORGIVENESS FROM THEM, BUT WHAT IF TELLING THAT PERSON ABOUT THE COMMENT WILL MAKE THEM EVEN MORE ANGRY OR SPREAD EVEN MORE FITNA, IN THAT SITUATION CAN YOU RECITE THE DUA OF THE SAINT OF RAJAB

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
To try to justify backbiting under any circumstances by telling someone you backbit them is like trying to justify eating pork by saying you will for sure repent later.

Help is Needed

Question:

Assalamu alaikum,

Part 1-
I have been in a state of despair and don’t know what to do. I’m from England. Going back years i was a murid of shaykh Nazim, but due to the shaykh that was teaching us he differences with shaykh Nazim and he took us mureeds of the path of Moulana. I think since then everything has just not gone right.  I got married and have a  son. We have had many argument to the extent of me leaving and moving in with my mother.  It has been several years that I have not lived with her. I do go and see her give her money and I spend time with my son. The love that I had for her has gone. I  do however care for her but that is all. In the time that I left her I met a girl.

Part 2-
She is just a friend at the moment. I really do love this girl. Her family do not wish for her to marry me. The parents of that girl do come and see us but only as friends, she is everything that i have always wanted. She has been to Hajj she is always observing halal and haram, she is very caring and family orientated. She is a 5 times praying girl. The best part is that she gets on with my mother. Also everything that I try and do does not go well in business. I am experiencing very bad financial difficulty. Whatever I try in business it goes wrong. I am paralyzed on the left side and suffer from epilepsy. I had a blood clot when I was blank years of age which caused the paralysis and after that I have been suffering with epilepsy.

Answer:

Wa`alaikumussalam,

Leave the other shaykh and do not ever mention his name again. Renew your Bay’ah here if you wish to. We are very connected now with eshaykh.com, Sufilive.com, Naqshbandi.org, Sunnah.org that can provide you with guidance. Go and see Mawlana Shaykh Nazim in Cyprus if you can, if not, make a point to see Shaykh Hisham whenever he goes to the UK. Stick to these and you will be all right.

You have a child. From your description you are still married to your wife, the mother of your son. Go back to your wife. Try to reconcile for his future. There is always hope it will succeed if you only try. Recite Ya Halim and Ya Wadud 100-300x daily. Do this as a priority before anything else, Insha Allah, Mawlana Shaykh Hisham will pray for you.

Living with Hindu In-laws

Question:

Asalaam alaykum,
I am due to be married to a convert Muslim who was raised a Hindu. His elderly parents accept that he is a Muslim and are willing to be very accommodating to me so that my religious beliefs are not compromised. My future in-laws would like us to live with them after marriage and so does my fiance, Is this permissible? They are vegetarians but after listening to a recent video by MSH where it was said it is haram to show a Hindu lady your hair or even eat vegetarian food prepared by her. I am now worried and confused. In a recent dream which I had MSN and MSH consent and give their blessing on my choice of husband to be.

Thanking you in advance

Answer:

Alaykum as-Salam,
Explain to him that you understand and respect the duty he owes to his elderly parents but that your own position demands separate quarters and your own kitchen space as well. If he is able to provide that then covering is also feasible. Mutual agreement and respect of all will bring blessing and heavenly support in sha Allah. Otherwise they will also understand that you have to protect yourself from the harm of an impermissible situation. And Allah knows best.
