Reading Quran without tajweed.

Question:

Asalaam wayekum,

I am very embaressed about this and it has taken me ages to ask this. I ask this question as I know that it is a common problem. Awhile ago I asked the question about sarf and nahv as I was struggling. I was struggling as when I learnt Quran, I did not learn it with the proper tajweed as many people pronounced the Arabic letters like Urdu. I am trying to sort this now. My question is that can I still read Quran even if I have not fully perfected the tajweed? After all, it is trying to break the habits of a lifetime. Someone said that I shouldn’t.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

No, in fact there is far more blessings coming to the non-Arab who struggles to read Allah Most High’s Holy Word than to the Arab who recites with ease, and our shuyukh teach that the angels correct our mispronunciation.
