Exercising to Islamic Music and in Prayer Room

Question:

Assalaamu Alaykum dearest Shaykh,

I am a young married woman who has put on some weight, because of this, I have started an exercise program in the comfort of my prayer room at home.

I am just wondering if exercising, with no scarf, just tights and a short t-shirt, in this room is permissible despite having holy books and several pictures of Awliya on my walls (Shaykh Nazim, Shaykh Muhammad Adil, Shaykh Hishaam and some of the Naqshbandi khalifas) there?

Also, I enjoy exercising to music, especially Islamic nasheeds. It makes me feel so energized and happy. Are these actions allowed? I just feel that sometimes it is disrespectful to do exercises while having such clothes on in the presence on such holy objects (Photos of Awliya, Quraan and other holy books, and with Islamic Music).

Please advise.

Answer:

Although it is not your intention to show any kind of disrespect for “holy books and several pictures of Awliya on the walls (Shaykh Nazim, Shaykh Muhammad Adil, Shaykh Hisham and some of the Naqshbandi khalifas)”, we would advise that you – if possible – find another room more suitable for fitness and exercise. By the way, Islam not only allows but encourages physical fitness and exercise.
