Growth of Prophetic Hair a Requirement for Authenticity?

Question:

Assalam alaikum

I trust this finds you well and good. I just wanted to ask you a very quick question regarding the blessed hair of the prophet (saw). My mother was given a strand of the blessed hair a year or two ago. We’ve reserved a room for it and do nothing but prayers in that room.

Is it authentically reported and known that the blessed hair of the Prophet (saw) grow and multiply over time? Or is this false?

A family friend of ours, caretaker of the shrine of Nizamuddin Awlia (India) says they have a strand which was given to them for protection by the last Mughal emperor when the British were waging war in the region. However in over a century it hasn’t grown or multiplied even though it is genuinely from the prophet (saw).

Yet I’ve come across others who say that it does grow and multiplies.

Your clarification will be immensely appreciated.

Wassalam

Answer:

`Alaykum Salam,

Growth is not the prerequisite of authenticity but a bonus. Transmission history is a stronger proof. Yet, blessing hinges on belief, love, sincerity, adab on our own part and of course divine generosity. Asking for proof — whether transmissive or supernatural — is good for those in need of proofs but ultimately superfluous in matters of blessing because the blessings themselves are abundant and unlimited. They are what we seek. The artefact is only a reminder and a symbol of the Prophet’s blessed reality.
