Question:
Asalamu Alaikum,
I am 2_ years of age and have recently been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis of the hips, and I am often in pain. The doctors have told me that there is nothing they can do for me, and that there is no cure.
My question involves taking a medicine called ‘glucosamine and chondroitin’. Is it permissible for me to take this combination of medicine even though it is not halal? You can buy vegetarian glucosamine but this seems to be less effective than the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin.
P.s. Please could you also ask Shaykh Nazim to pray for me and for my condition? I would love to meet him one day… InshAllah.
JazakAllah Khairan.
Answer:
Wa`alaykumussalam,
Every illness, except death, has a cure. If conventional medicine cannot help, there are always alternatives like acupuncture, therapies like orthotics, massage, hydrotherapy or thermotherapy, including diet and weight control. You can find some online vendors selling halal Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements and have them delivered to you.
One traditional way recommended by Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (may Allah grant him long life!) is to boil sheep-trotters with plenty of water until it turns jelly-like. Take some spoonfuls every morning before eating or drinking anything else. Repeat this for 40 days. Give sadaqah. You can read the 6 Ayats of Shifa’.
