Medical treatment for Schizophrenia

Question:

Salaam to you.

My uncle has been suffering from what the doctors describe as ‘paranoid schizophrenia’ for a long time now. My aunty says that he has a relapsed in deterioration of his mental state recently e.g. talking to himself etc. So my aunt brought him to visit the doctors for treatment and among his medication are ‘jabs for anti hallucinations’, to relax himself’. Historically, he has had bouts of violent outbursts.

From my observation, my uncle seems to be socially disconnected rather than anything else. He does not present himself well. I do not think that he should be visiting the doctors any more for any more jabs or any other kinds of modern treatment. He is 6_ years old.

What does Shaykh Hisham say about this matter?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Mawlana Shaykh Hisham says that sometimes modern medical science IS effective, especially in cases where traditional treatments are slow or require long intervention. This sounds like one of such cases, and Allah knows best.

Best thing is for you to pray for him, and if he is open, let Shaykh [private] recite on water from the Dhikr for him to drink. Insha-Allah that will relieve him greatly.
