I have something that I’ve been struggling with for 3 years and that is that I’ve been wanting to get a tattoo. I struggle to understand how tattoos are haraam. And what makes them haraam as I personally see it as body art.

Answer:
The sayings of Muhammad (saws) with regard to this matter testify that the one who does tattoo is cursed and that this is a major sin. We have only difference of scholarly opinion as to the question why this is forbidden. Ibn Mas’ood (r.a.) stated this is haram as it permanently changes the creation of Allah. Kohl which is used for adornment by women is permitted because it is not permanent.
