Question:
Salaam,
My husband and i are looking into IVF and during this process there is potential of more than one embryo is produced, i would like to know is it permissible to freeze embryos if not used at the time for later treatment?. Or do we leave the embryo?
Answer:
Waalaykumussalam,
The answer to your question depends on the legal status of IVF in the sacred Law which, although IVF is permitted in itself, is made impermissible by the fact that it involves kashf al-`awra (baring genitals) before strangers for a matter that is not an absolutely necessary one of life and death, as Dr Samer al-Nass related from his teacher the Mufti of Syria Abu al-Yusr Abidin. Therefore IVF is haram, as is everything related to its process, and Allah knows best.
