POSTSCRIPT: NOTE FROM SIDI AMIN PATEL
The Hizb al Bahr text as published in India by the the Chishty order, includes an “Aitsam” (introduction) dua and a closing dua “اِلختتام”. This one will find in a widely sold and distributed text published in Delhi, India, which includes the Dalailul Khayrat, Qasida Burdah and the Hizb al Bahr. Amongst the Chishtis, once ‘ijaza’ for the Hizb al Bahr is granted by the Shaykh, the adept has to undergo the ‘zakat’ for the Hizb al Bahr. The ‘zakat’ for the Hizb al Bahr in the Chishti order entails reciting it 360x while fasting, under seclusion across a period of 3, 6 or 12 days during the initial days of the month of Safar.
I am not aware at what point the “introduction dua” was introduced during transmission from the Shadhili to Chishti order, however, I assume the introductory dua was introduced either by the Chishtis or some intermediary.
The closing dua for the Hizb al Bahr can be found in Sidi Ahmad Zarruq (of the Shadhili order) commentary on the Hizb al Bahr, link to a beautiful handwritten copy of the full text from the 1800s: (Entire Book).
Attached is the introductory dua (from the Indian text), and the Hizb al Bahr’s closing dua (from Sidi Zarruq’s commentary).
