Permissibility of dental work

Question:

Asalaamu aleikum Respected members of eshaykh,

Is it permissable to have a tooth implant for my first molar?

Also the dentist says I need two additional crowns for my other molar teeth but they are made from an alloy of gold, titanium and pallidium metals. Would this be permitted on medical grounds for men and women?

Thank you and asalaamu aliekum.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

To replace teeth that have been taken out because they were damaged or were causing discomfort is permissible. As far as crowns for molar teeth made from an alloy of gold it is not permissible, as it is forbidden for a man to wear gold. A woman may plate her teeth with gold because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Gold and silk have been permitted for the females of my ummah.”
