Question:
Salaam ya shaykhs of this beautiful website,
My question is regarding khatm. An imam from a Hanafi background said that if you read one Quran in your lifetime then whichever gathering you go to, you can give that suwab(blessing) for that one Quran you have read to the imam who is doing that dua because it is just sawab..is this true? I thought for each khatm you need to read a full quran again and give it.
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
What you thought is correct. Ihda’ al-thawab or donation of reward for acts of worship including reciting/reading Qur’an is understood as a one time thing for each act and Allah knows best. One time Shaykh Muhyi al-Din Ibn `Arabi donated the reward of reciting 70,000 “la ilaha il-Allah” to one person, and he did not mention giving the same to someone else after that. Thawab is not “just thawab” but a momentous Divine gift. One has to do more in order to give more and not sleep on one’s laurels.
