Mustabeen vs. Mubin

Question:

as-Salaamu ‘alaykum,

My mother is asking why Allah Subhana wa ta’ala is describing the revelation sent to the Bani Israel as mustabeen while the Qur’an itself is described throughout as mubin.

[36:69]

Thank you in advance.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
The scholars of tafsir considered them synonymous and both mean “clear”, although linguistically the added letters “s” and “t” indicate added effort or length (of time or otherwise). Counterwise, they said that the difference between lam tastati` and lam tasti` is to indicate excessive haste in the latter case. And Allah knows best.
