Question:
Assalamualaykum
Respected Shaykh,
Often we see that when babies are born, especially in indo-pak families, people would make the babies wear black bead bracelets, or keep on them small pen-knives. It’s often interpreted as protection from nazr, evil eyes, and negative energies.
What is the basis of this?
Shukran
Answer:
A`udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajeem
Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem
These things exist in many cultures across the world, using different objects and symbols. If these are based on accepted norms (‘Urf) that are not against ‘Aqidah (belief) and Shari’ah (law) with the intention of bringing benefit, then it’s ok.
Mawlana Shaykh Nazim (may Allah grants him long and healthy life!) teaches us to use red or purple cloth to cover the child as a shield from the shaytan.
