Question:
Assalamoalaykum shaykhs,
Peace be with you all.
DR told me that I’m infertile and I am ok with this now, secretly live in hope but I have been clear with my husband that it may never happen for us, he states that he wants to stay in the marriage (I am very lucky Mashaallah).
What are his options from an Islamic point of view, he will not take another wife but I love him too much to make him loose out on being a father by staying with me (we are considering other options like adoption but I know that his fam will not agree) also his family said that Islam says that he should divorce me as one main purpose of marriage is to have children. What is your views on this please?
Waalaykumsalaam.
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
Our Prophet (S) encouraged marriage to a woman who is fertile as “he is going to feel proud of our large numbers before the other prophets on the Day of Resurrection.” This does not mean that it is haram but rather makrooh to marry infertile woman. You may consider taking a child to give him foster care.
