Question:
Salaam,
I kept my father’s name as my surname after marriage. I am married to a convert and the children have 2 Muslim names and then English surname. My husband wants me to change my surname to his English surname for ease and his pleasure, shall I?
Answer:
As-Salamu ‘Alaikum,
Yes, you are allowed to take your husband’s last name. This is something which has been established to a great extent across the globe and there are good reasons for it. For example, when the wife carries the last name of the husband, it becomes easy to identify that a marital relation exists between the two individuals. It also brings about ease in affixing the child’s last name with the father’s last name which then becomes the family last name.
