My girlfriends want me to do the Nikah now so we can move into together and plan for the weeding the following year. The Idea of this is so us being together is Halal. But her parents are saying we need to also get a marriage certificate. Can we do the Nikah and marry in a religious sense and get the marriage licence at the actually wedding next Sept?

Listen to your parents, they obviously have your best interests in mind. Do the nikah, get the marriage certificate from your local courthouse and do the “big wedding” in September, and insha-Allah khayr.
