Question:
As Salamu Alaikum,
My friend has a daughter named “Ecrin” it appears in the Qur’an. They think the name means “Allah’s gift”, but he isn’t too sure about the name. He asked me about it and I told him, if you intend to change the name depending on the response, I will ask some people. And he said, if it is a bad name, he will change his daughter’s name.
So, is “Ecrin” a good name for a girl? Should he change it?
Answer:
Alaykum Salam,
Ajr is indeed in the Qur’an and means reward, but it is not used as a name, nor is Ajrin used as a name. He may instead name his daughter Thawaab (ثواب) which is an old and prestigious Arabic female first name that also means Divine reward and also appears in the Qur’an. Among the famous women thus named was Thawaab bint AbdAllah al-Hanzaliyya, a great poet.
