Selling the family home

Question:

Asalamwaleikum. I was hoping for help from Sheikh Hisham insh’Allah. My brother and I inherited the family apartment. I wanted to sell it straight away to buy land, but my brother (who’s not a Muslim) thinks we can sell it for more later. The apartment is on the south coast of Spain and has been rented for 2 years. I feel a deep ancestral tie through it and feel strangely burdened, though alhamdulilah the income has been helping us survive. We live two hours away from there in the mountains in a Naqshbandi community. If I convince him to sell we could: move to the apartment while we sell (there’s no jamaat there,) try to sell it with the current renters there, or forget about selling it. I’m not sure what the best thing to do is. I would appreciate guidance and sorry to trouble you with petty things! Endless gratitude.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Keep renting and keep your income.
