Question:
Sidi,
Mawlana Shaykh Hisham often cites:
Argument extinguishes the light of Faith,
الجدال يطفئ نور الايمان
or
Argument extinguished the light of the heart.
الجدال يطفئ نور القلب
Do you have a source for this? I could not find it.
Answer:
This is not a hadith but a saying of one of the early Muslim authorities.
كتاب الشرح والإبانة على أصول السنة والديانة لابن بطة العُكْبري

From: Elaboration of the Principles of Sunni Doctrine by Ibn Batta al-`Ukbariyy
Translation:
Yusuf ibn Asbat said, “Looking at a person of innovation will extinguish the light of The Truth (al-Haqq) from the heart.” And Bishr ibn al-Harith said, “If your path passes by a person of innovation, then close your eyes before he reaches you.”
