Question for Shaykh Gibril Haddad: I am trying to learn more about the development of the madhabs for I have been interested in this topic for a while now. What are some of the best books and materials that are reliably translated into English on the subject of usul al fiqh?

Your question bears on two different subjects: history of the madhhabs and principles of jurisprudence. A good translation that comes to mind covering both issues is Shah Waliyyullah’s Hujjatullah by Hermansen. A major source for the first is al-Shafii’s Risala which was also translated well.
