wearing silk blended clothing or ties

Question:

Assalamu Alaikum Shaykh,

We were wondering if men are allowed to wear “silk blended clothing/ties”. For example, if a cloth has in it’s composition 10% silk fabric and 90% cotton fabric, instead of 100% silk, can men still wear them?

In case of wearing ties in office, can men wear silk ties?

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

If the cotton is more than the silk it is ok. Most ties today are from silk, so if you choose cotton with 10% silk, Allah is Ghafoorun Raheem, Forgiving and Merciful. In old times they used to wear silk to show off against the poor. Today they blend silk with cotton to prevent wrinkling, so you are not wearing with the intention of showing off.
