Question:
AssalaamunAlaikum.
Is it ok to donate blood?
I live in England and the hospital have a regular program of blood donation. Been donating for almost a year – once three months
On the same basis is it ok to accept a transfusion?
I accept that the blood may or may not be used for a good cause. It could be used for a drunkard or a accident. or mother giving birth. In the end. All is as Allah wills it to be.
It’s also a good place for dawah. People see a man with beard and a multi coloured leffke hat. We are not terrorists but lovers. :).
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
Good for da`wah and good money too sometimes.
Regarding the permissibility of donating blood, see the Post “Blood donation“.
As for accepting a blood transfusion, Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Hisham Kabbani relates:
After Grandshaykh [`Abdullah al-Fa’iz ad-Daghestani (q)] had had surgery for his eyes and for hernia, he became very anaemic from not eating. At first he refused but then they gave him two pints of blood. Later he said; “All my life I spent cleaning my blood, and that blood put me back to zero. The difficulty I have carried for the past 7 days due to that blood equals what I did in my whole life.” So a blood transfusion does affect a person and one should be careful about the blood one receives.
