Question:
As-salam-alaikum,
I and my parents are not agreeing on a suitor who is asking for my hand. He converted (said the Shahaada) to me three times and is going to be saying it to my parents. I am teaching him how to pray salaat. But this is not enough for my parents. They want him to go to a mosque. That is not a problem, but he needs to explain to his family his decision and does not want to announce it to the whole world just yet. He wants my parents approval before he goes and meets his family to explain his new life and his new potential wife. What kind of conversion is acceptable in Islam? Only the one done at the masjid?
Answer:
wa `alaykum salam,
To convert to Islam is a simple and easy process. One may convert in privacy in front of two male Muslim witnesses or two female and one male witness or he may do so in the mosque.
