Question:
Assalamualaikum.
We know many things about dreams, but I could not find literature that addresses ‘wakeful visions’. By saying vision, I precisely mean the visions that one sees during the zikr, whether it is during the night or day. I had many visions including seeing RasoolAllah (sallallahu a’lahi wa sallam) in more than one occasion. Also I received certain instructions in such wakeful visions.
Can you please highlight the merits of good visions as opposed to dreams, and also please refer to some reliable reading materials on visions.
Was salam

Wa alaikum Salaam wa Rahmatullah,
In a hadith the Prophet (saws) said: man ra’anee fi’l-manam fa sayaranee fi’l-yaqazha – “Who ever saw me in a dream/vision (ruya) will see me in reality.”
Imam Suyuti and Many of the Awliya and Pious scholars have spoken on seeing Prophet (s) in a waking state and it is common among the people of Tasawwuf.
Al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar in his Fath wrote that there are six possible understandings of the meaning of the hadith, the sixth being:
سادسها: أنه يراه في الدنيا حقيقة ويخاطبه
“That he would see [the Prophet (s)] in this dunya in reality [in a waking state] and he would speak to him.”
