Question:
Assalam o alaikum, awliyas, sheikhs and all
I hear a lot about female circumcision in Islam and wondered why if women have to do it why is it not widespread among Muslim women, or is the practice of mainly Africans Egypt etc.
masalam
Answer:
`Alaykum as-salam,
Circumcision is wajib (required) in the Shafi`i school for men and women indifferently and therefore practiced in all areas and countries that follow that Madhhab as in Southeast Asia, South India, the Arabian peninsula and the countries you mentioned. It is not a major issue.
See Origin of Circumcision for a comprehensive discussion of this topic.
