Question:
Asalamualaikum,
I am a female, can I also wear a male Sunnah ring? Which hand and which finger should I wear this ring? Can I still have the ring on when I am on menstrual cycle?
Thank you.
Answer:
Waalaykumussalam warahmatullah,
You may wear if it is a gold ring with any inlaid stone including `aqiq. Gold ensures it is not an imitation of men. I once had a fiqh teacher who wore typically non-Islamic clothing (tight shirt and pants, leather jacket, no beard and no headcover). He himself brought up the hadith “Whoever resembles a people then he is one of them” and he commented, “But I am not intending to resemble them.” I mentioned the latter exchange to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim — may Allah sanctify his soul — and he said on the spot that if the resemblance is established then intention is irrelevant.
The Sunna for men requires for a ring to be worn on the annular (“ring-finger”) or the auricular (“pinky”) of either hand but preferably the right. For women all fingers of either hand are permissible and even the toes.
A precious stone ring needs not be removed when on menstrual cycle.
