Father’s earnings

Question:

Assalaam ‘alaykum all eShaykh staff.

My father has worked for a bank more than 35 years of his life and automatically he gets his income from the bank. The bank however is supposed to help people and deals with loan and obviously interests. So, is the income of my father considered haraam? I’m quite disturbed by this at the moment because if his salary is haraam it means all our food were haraam and consequently our ibaadah not accepted. we even went for the last Hajj. We live in Mauritius and here there are other Muslims working for the same bank. if the income is haraam what can I do apart from crying? And now he is already retired and receiving pension from the bank.

Answer:

Wa alaykum salam,

The salary obtained from the bank is a mixture of unlawful and lawful wealth. The main part of it is lawful. In your case, it would be permissible to accept this money as you have no other choice and you did not have a direct involvement with interest-based transactions.
