Question:
As salamu alaikum Beloved Shaykh & all
In my family a lot of people practice something like for eg if in my family is a girl who is supposed to get married so her parents will look for a nice guy & invite them to house & they will be given someting to eat in food or mixed in drink that will change their heart & accept the girl in marriage for their son.
somethings like that & they say they bring these things from some shaiks or baba’s.is it allowed?& my family beleves a lot in these things & I feel its not good someone trying to have controll over someones will.
Please guide us & help us & forgive us.
May allah give more & more to our beloved Shayk’s every day
Answer:
`Alaykum as-Salam,
You are right that this is wrong and it consists in betrayal of guests, one of the massive enormities in Islam. It resembles Jahiliyya and sihr (witchcraft) more than the practice of Muslims, who put only pure goodness in the food and drink they serve to their guests, i.e. clean halal and tasteful material ingredients, with Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem.
Also, such a practice in itself reflects mistrust in the Decree of Allah and His generosity. Muslims are noble and rely on Allah, they do not play tricks behind the backs of others. In the end they will get someone who practices the same, because like attracts like. Another important point to remember is that sooner or later the cat will come out of the bag and distrust will prevail.
They should remember the hundreds of verses that command TAQWA in the Holy Qur’an. They should try to follow the Sunnah instead of playing with fire and they should resolve to follow the command of the Prophet (upon him blessings and peace):
When someone makes a marriage proposal to you and his religion and character please you, then marry him off. If you do not do so, there will be fitna on earth and widespread corruption. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)
