Kids Islamic Education

Question:

Salamalakum,

I was wondering what the best way to teach the Qur’an to my kids would be.
They only know English at the moment. Shall I get them memorizing the Arabic? Or find them an Arabic teacher first? Is it worth them memorizing the English translation first so they know the meaning? Or learning the Arabic and English at the same time?
Is there anything else to concentrate on?

They teach the Qu’ran at a mosque 20 miles away. The Imam there is nice. I went for jumma prayers but stopped when he started making jokes about pirs and sheikhs etc. Is it worth sending my kids there for now? (He’s not Wahabi or Salafi as he is against them (too)).

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

Teach them the basics first such Fatiha, Ayatul Kursi, Amanar Rasul and the short Suras for memorization, and once you find an appropriate teacher you can hire them to come to your home and teach them, or take them to the teacher. Yourself can read a page or more every day, up to 1 juz‘ if you can. Read dua over food when preparing, before eating and after and offer to the Prophet and Awliya to get support and inspiration.
