Help regarding divorce

Question:

Assalamoalaykum respected shaikh!
My husband and I had many fights. About 1 and half year back we agreed to end our marriage. At that time we didn’t know that a divorce should be phased and thought that three divorces in a single go will completely end nikah so my husband said to me “I divorce you” three times in single go on same day on phone. and we considered our nikah completely annulled.

Then after four months he also signed legal divorce papers in front of me and a lawyer. I want to know that will this divorce be counted as single divorce or three divorces? Secondly, even if it is taken as single divorce still the period of iddah is over now and my husband didn’t take me back so can I get married to anyone else as I am getting marriage proposals but I am confused I can marry anyone else or not.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,
If your husband did not take you back within the period of iddah you are both to understand that according to Islamic law your marriage has been dissolved and therefore you have the right to marry someone else.
