Question:
Assalamualaikum. I wish to get married to a lady whom I feel strongly can make a good wife. Unfortunately my mother feels strongly that I should forgo this intention, as this lady is the only child of a single parent. By the way, my mother is a single parent and the rest of my siblings have married. She feels that I should get married to someone who can stay together with her. The lady whom I want to get married to, prefers us to spend some nights staying with my mother and some nights staying with her mother. Should I forgo this intention and listen to my mother’s request? Am I not being filial if I go ahead with my plan to marry this lady? In Islam , when a man marries a woman, who should be his priority, his wife or his mother?
Answer:
`Alaykum as-Salam,
In Islam a man’s priority is his parents and a woman’s priority is her husband.
