Question:
As-salamualaikum,
I had a question about females taking the husband’s last name after marriage. I was always told that traditionally, women keep their family name after marriage. However, I was wondering if this is accurate. What is the historical precedent? Is there anything stated explicitly regarding the matter? Can a woman take the husband last name if she prefers or it better to keep the family name?

Answer:
`Alaykum assalam
Both ways are correct, in Islam a woman may be identified as ‘haram fulan‘ the wife of so and so where haram is pronounced with a short a; or as ‘bint fulan‘ the daughter of so and so.
