Visitors after Childbirth

Question:

Salaam Alaikum,

Inshallah you are all in good health – Ameen.

I am due to give birth in the next few weeks inshallah, and my husband has advised me that no one is allowed to visit me apart from immediate family, until 40 days after the birth. Is this correct?

I know that I and the baby have to remain indoors for 40 days, but we need clarity on who and who may not visit during this period.

JazakAllah.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

The 40 days period (Nifas) is the maximum days for post natal bleeding according to Islamic law. During this period the mother is not to pray, fast, read Qur’an, have sexual contact with her husband etc. If the bleeding stops before 40 days then she should take Ghusl (bath) and start offering Salah etc.. This is what needs to be observed. Everything else is not part of our Islamic tradition. Allahu A’lam!
