A common practice among Sufis in my country

Question:

Assalaam Alaikum. Many people when they are about to get married or need to choose between choices go to Sufis and sometimes the Sufi uses dhikr bead or Sand or Quran to check the best options…is this fortune telling…if not, is it right in Islam?

Answer:

Walaikum assalam,

Real Sufis follow the sunnah of Sayyidina Muhammad (pbuh) to pray the prayer of Istikharah whenever faced with making an important choice. Sufis follow that sunnah in their every day life, and if someone asks them to make istikhara on their behalf, then they are very happy to help.

No fortune telling is allowed in Islam. Even if the fortune teller happens to guess right, he is still a liar.

Allah knows best,

Ali Elsayed
