Question:
Assalamualaikum,
I had a question regarding the permissibility of tampons.
The only thing that I have found is that “It is offensive (makruh) to have this cotton (kursuf) inserted fully in the internal part of the vagina, because it resembles masturbation. (See: Majmu’a Rasa’il Ibn Abidin, 1/84-85)” Regarding the fear of loss of virginity, I saw this negated through “If a woman lost her virginity due to jumping, injury, becoming old or (strong) menstrual periods, then she will be considered a virgin.” (al-Ikhtiyar li ta’lil al-Mukhtar, 3/116)”
Overall though I am still unclear. Are there also any health issues that I may not be aware of? To my understanding Toxic Shock Syndrome associated with tampons is very rare especially when used correctly. However, are there any other health reasons regarding the blood that stays within the body through the tampon?
In addition to tampons, there are also non-absorbent menstrual cups that simply collects menstrual flow. It is inserted in the body and sits at the lower base of the vaginal canal. Many people are using them now as they eliminate the waste from using tampons since they are washable and reusable. It is made from soft healthcare grade silicone that is odorless, latex-free, plastic-free and BPA-free. Would these be permissible?
I apologize for asking so many questions, but I am very curious as to understanding the reasoning behind the ruling.
Jazak Allah Khair
Answer:
`Alaykum salam
The default ruling of sanitary napkins is permissibility as the hadiths on menses (hayd) mention them. Modern-day tampons were inexistent in the time of Ibn `Abidin so his caveat may not apply since their intrusiveness is no longer an issue as it may once have been.
Regarding cups, anything that collects menstrual blood safely and hygenically is permissible. As for rare cases of toxicity whatever safe and hygenic alternative is found is indicated, and rare cases do not alter the default rulings and Allah knows best.
