Is it important to follow a madhab school of thought?

Question:

asalm mualykum I’ve been having a debate with friends and family ,and alot of confusion,on this subject many believe they should follow a medhab, and many don’t, like the question on where to hold your hands while in prayer there many, narrations on where Mohammad (as) had hold his hand on his chest and below his belly button, and many times you go to the masjid u see many people have there hands in different positions whose to say there right.

Answer:

wa `alakum salam,
We are to follow one madhhab (it is wajib). To go back and forth from one madhhab to another is not allowed to one who does not have required knowledge of Qur’an and Sunnah.

Sayyiduna Ali (RA) says, “It is part of the Sunnah to place the palm over the palm below the navel.”

Position of Hanafi school is to place the palm of one’s right hand on his left wrist below the navel. The wrist would thus be in the middle of the palm. Women however place their hands on their blossoms.
