Intention for fast

Question:

Assalam u alayekum !
I was reading this post :
http://spa.qibla.com/issue_view.asp?HD=3&ID=16124&CATE=246
and with regards to this post I want to ask that what if a person doesn’t make a verbal intention for fast neither does he recall it in his mind (conscious) but the purpose of taking pre-dawn meal in his “sub-conscious” is to fast from dawn to sunset (otherwise he would not had awaken himself to take meal in pre-dawn time), will his fast be valid?
shukran.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

The fast is valid and the verbalization of intention is desirable but not indispensable. Deliberately awakening oneself from sleep is consciousness by definition. All schools agree that the seat of intention is the heart, while the tongue only acts as its witness. Use it next time.
