Salawat after sneezing

Question:

Is it permissible, forbidden or desirable to recite salawat on the Prophet (s) after hamd, upon drinking water or sneezing?

Answer:

There are three situations where the invocation of blessings on the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, is specifically “not legitimized” (ghayr mashru`) by agreement of the Schools, all three inside Salat: when bowing, when standing after bowing, and in prostration. “Even so, it is important to *not* consider this to be disliked” (much less a grave sin!) warns Imam Shams al-Din al-Qastallani (d. 923) in Masalik al-Hunafa ila Mashari` al-Salat `ala al-Nabi al-Mustafa (Ed. Bassam Muhammad Jarud, Abu Dhabi: al-Majma` al-Thaqafi, 1999, p. 416).

The most that can be said is that dislike applies only in one way: wher/never *dhikr itself* is generally disliked, such as (i) in the bath, or (ii) “answering the call of nature,” or (iii) at places of filth.

As for the narration, “Do not mention me in three situations: when naming (Allah Most High) over food, when slaughtering, and when sneezing,” it was dismissed by al-Bayhaqi, al-Sakhawi (in al-Qawl al-Badi` fil-Salat wal-Salam `alah al-Habib al-Shafi`), and Ibn al-Qayyim (in Jala’ al-Afham fi fadl al-Salat wal-Salam `ala Muhammadin Khayri al-Anam) as forged.

Furthermore, not only are the above rulings of dislike not based on firm proofs; but there are Qur’an and hadith proofs as well as fiqh positions to the opposite, namely, that it is good to invoke blessings in situations of slaughtering, sneezing, and amazement.

Following are some of the proofs which apply to the desirability of blessing the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, after drinking, most of them general and deductive, some of them precise and explicit:

– Allah Most High in His Book explicitly commanded the believers to invoke blessings and salutations on the Prophet:

{Truly, Allah (blesses the Prophet!) and the angels bless the Prophet!   All you who believe, invoke blessings on him! And invoke salutations of peace! Abundant salutations!}

There is consensus in Islam [1] that such invocation is obligatory and (more relevantly here) [2] that Allah Most High did not restrict such invocation to a quantity, modality, time, or place other than the abundance and magnification expressed in the emphatic wording of the Ayah.

As for the proofs from hadith they are too many. Suffice it to mention the following:

– Wherever there is dhikr of Allah Most High it is required of us to invoke blessings on the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, as a general rule. Saying “al-hamdu lillah” after drinking water is one such dhikr.

– In every du`a and supplication to Allah Most High it is required of us to invoke blessings on our Prophet also. this is particularly emphasized in the Shafi`i and Hanbali schools. Saying al-hamdu lillah after drinking water is one such du`a.

– It is recommended to drink water, recite shahada, and invoke blessings on the Prophet after wudu’.

– The Prophet said, upon him blessings and peace, that “Whoever does not thank people, does not thank Allah.” If a believer thanks whoever brought them water, it is even more appropriate to thank the Messenger of Allah, upon him blessings and peace, who brought them the means for that water to be, in our lives, a foresign of Divine forgiveness, not Divine wrath.

– A hadith states that the invocation of blessings on the Prophet insures that one shall drink from his Basin on the Day of resurrection. Whoever knows this, ought to remember it even more when drinking water.

– Another hadith states that the invocation of blessings on the Prophet insures one shall never be parched from lack of water here or hereafter. Whoever knows this, ought to remember it even more when drinking water.

– Another hadith mentions that the invocation of blessings on the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, Other hadiths mention that it enlivens the heart, benefits one’s children and grandchildren, brings wealth and banishes poverty by the grace of Allah Most High.

– The hadith of Thawban in Muslim mentions that the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, supplicated from Allah Most High that He spare his Ummah the hardship of drought. Look at your Prophet, he wants you and your descendants to drink your fill here and hereafter, and here we are discussing whether it is bid`a for people to bless him. It is written in the Psalms about al-Quds: May my tongue cleave to my palate if I do not remember you day and night.

– The Prophet said: “If this world was worth even as much as the wing of a gnat in the sight of Allah Most High, He would not have given from it a single draught of water to a disbeliever.” This means the believer is required to remember that, although water is vital, yet the gifts of Allah Most High are immeasurably greater than water. Consequently, the believer is required to invoke blessings on the Prophet, as Allah’s Mercy to the worlds is dearer than life itself and dearer than cool water on a parched tongue on a hot day.

– The invocation of blessings on the Prophet is a protection from the hardships of the Day of Reckoning. After drinking water one day the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, told those present that they shall be questioned over this blessing. A believer who knows he shall be questioned over a cup of water is required to redouble the invocations of blessings before, during, and after drinking it.

If a good action is not specifically contextualized in the Qur’an and Hadith, it does not mean that its performance in that context becomes an innovation of misguidance. There are many examples of supplications and other acts of devotion innovated by the Companions (sometimes inside Fard Salat), the Successors, and those of later generations among the early Muslims. I have mentioned 160 such examples in my Sunna Notes, volume 2, on the Sunni definition of what is bid`a and what is not.

To take a very relevant example here, the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, told us to say “al-hamdu lillah” after sneezing, but he never added for us to also invoke blessings upon him. Al-Tirmidhi narrates that a man sneezed then said: “As-Salamu `alaykum.” The Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, said: “And upon you and your mother. When one of you sneezes, let him say: ‘al-hamdu lillahi rabbi al-`alamin,‘ and let whoever answers him say: ‘yarhamuka Allah,'” etc.

Yet it is related that Ibn `Umar, may Allah be well-pleased with him, upon hearing someone sneeze and say only “al-hamdu lillah,” told him on the spot: “You have acted miserly! *Wherever you say al-hamdu lillah, why do you not also invoke blessings on the Prophet?*” Something similar is also narrated from Abu Sa`id al-Khudri and Ibn `Abbas, may Allah be well-pleased with them.

(Ponder the meaning of a pure Arab calling another pure Arab stingy. Before Islam he might have killed him for the insult; after Islam he might have thanked him all his life for the teaching.)

This is because the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace, *did not prevent us from adding the blessings on him either.*

Similarly, the famous hadith of Ubay ibn Ka`b in which he said to the Prophet, upon him blessings and peace: “I shall make my entire prayer consist in blessing upon you,” and the latter more than approved him: “Indeed, your whole need shall be taken care of then.” Ubay’s statement has been explained to mean: “After my required salat and the required dhikr therein, I shall devote myself completely to salawat upon your noble person.”

permissibility of photos of the Relics belonging to the Beloved Prophet (P.B.U.H)

Question:

Dear brothers,

Assalamu aleikum warehmatulahi wabarakatuhu,

Thank you for your email.

MashAllah your website is very good. May Allah provide you with all the baraqah, wassilati Habibe Mustafa Sallallahu Aleihi Wassalam-ameen.

Hanging Photographs in home

Question:

What is the ruling of hanging photos of one’s deceased parents in the entry way to one’s home, thereby seeking prayers for mercy and forgiveness for them from whoever enters his house?

Answer:

There is nothing wrong in circulating and hanging photos of humans or animals since they are free of imitating Allah’s creation about which makers of ‘depictions’ were strongly warned. Hanging pictures is permissible provided the photos are free of nudity and do not incite lust. This is because the type of ‘imaging’ intended by the firm warning in the hadith is creating complete statues which imitate Allah’s creation. Though it is called ‘depiction’, photography* is not unlawful since this apparent cause is absent – and rulings follow their apparent causes, whether present or absent. In truth, photography captures rays of light; it is called ‘depiction’ only in a metaphorical sense, and what matters in legal rulings is what is designated – not the designation itself.

Based on the above and in reference to the question, it is permissible to hang your parent’s photos for this noble purpose as long as your mother’s photo is decent. There is no harm whether it is a partial or complete picture. This is not prohibited – contrary to what some [may] have told you.

Dr. Ali Goma Mohammed

*In Arabic, the words for sculpting, depiction, and imaging share a common linguistic root.

Dream: Gold Scroll

Dream:

Auzobillahi minushaytaanir rajeem…. Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem
Assalam o Alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu Ya Sayyidi, Ya Hajjah
and Family

In my dream, someone came to me and gave me a gold scroll. That person told me that Mawlana Shaykh Nazim asked him to pass it to me. I open the scoll that was in gold but didn’t understand what was there. As I remember my dream I saw  something that looked like the seal of Prophet Muhammad(saw).

What does this mean?
Please Sayyidi pray for me and my family. We Love you!
Thank You

Interpretation:

Gold is dhahab in Arabic which can also mean ‘to go’ or ‘to remove’. Insha-Allah in this dream it means removal of  impurities, where Mawlana Shaykh Muhammad Nazim al-Haqqani is indicating you are a member of Ahl al-Bayt, as Allah says:

???????? ??????? ??????? ?????????? ??????? ????????? ?????? ????????? ??????????????? ??????????

{for God only wants to remove from you all that might be loathsome, O you members of the [Prophet’s] household, and to purify you to utmost purity} (Surat al-Ahzab, 33:33)

And Allah knows best,

Mother’s baddua and munafiq parents.

Question:

Dear Shaykh, Assalamu alaykum,

1. My mother is a munafiq I believe and she gives me baddua. I try very hard to please Allah SWT. She makes me cry. I am adult female. I say: hasbun Allahu wa naim...100x daily, daily awrad, 5 daily prayers, extra dhikr, wear hijab, do not fornicate, eat and wear halal, try to care for her but she tortures me. When and how will this all end, please?
2. To what extent must I obey my munafiq parents? They have got me under their control and I am unable to live with the freedom Allah intended for me.

Thank you and sorry to bother you.

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam.

Pray two raka`ats, in the first recite Surat al-Fatiha and eight times Ayat al-Kursi, in the second raka`at Surat al-Fatiha and seven times Ayat al-Kursi, then in sajdah make a du`a that Allah swt to make your mama’s heart more tender towards you.

Daily recite 100 times Ya Wadud, 100 times Ya Salam, 100 times Ya Hannan, 100 times salawat upon the Prophet (s).

Don’t answer your mama back with rudeness, try to be soft with her. Her bad du`a will not affect you if you did not do any wrong.

Kaaba Shareef

Question:

Aslam-O-Alaiykum,

My heartiest regards to all….

I want to know the meaning of below mentioned narration:

” One of ` A’ishah (Radiyallahu Anha) ‘s handmaidens came to her and said: “O Mother of believers, I went around the Ka`bah seven times and touched the corner twice or trice”. ` A’ishah (Radiyallahu Anha) replied: “May Allah not reward you for pushing your way through men. It would have been sufficient for you to you to say “Allah Akbar” as you passed by”. [Musnad al-Shafi’i] ”

Is it not allowed for woman to touch or hold Kaaba Shareef’s cover (Ghilaaf) Or What does this mean???

Please clarify the view…

Waiting for reply..

Regards.

Answer:

`Alaykum as-Salam,

This is a good question because it is one of the things people need to be reminded of constantly, although the report is self-explanatory but it needs more exposure.

There are several narrations on that topic in Musnad Al-Shafi`i (Allah be well-pleased with him) and also in his Sunan al-Ma’thura and Kitab al-Umm as well as al-Bayhaqi’s Ma`rifat al-Sunan wal-Aathaar and his Sunan al-Kubra:

(i) a hadith of the Prophet (upon him and his family, wives and children blessings and peace) in which he says to our ligelord `Umar b. al-Khattab (Allah be well-pleased with him and make him pleased):

O Aba Hafs, you are big and strong so do not crowd others at the Corner for truly you may hurt the weak person. If you find a gap touch [the Black Stone] but otherwise just say ‘Allahu akbar’ and keep going. [Musnad Ahmad, Sunan al-Bayhaqi]  Al-Shafi`i, al-Umm and al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-Sunan (Hajj, al-Istilam fil-ziham); Rafi`i, Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi`i (2:329); Ibn al-Athir, al-Shafi (3:475); Banna al-Sa`ati, Bada’i` al-Minan (1:355).

(ii) Al-Shafi`i with his chain to Ibn `Abbas (Allah be well-pleased with him and his father) who said: “When you find a crowd around the Corner, go away and do not stop.” Al-Shafi`i, al-Umm and al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-Sunan (Hajj, al-Istilam fil-ziham); Rafi`i, Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi`i (2:326); Ibn al-Athir, al-Shafi (3:474); Banna al-Sa`ati, Bada’i` al-Minan (1:355). This is in fact the beginning of a hadith narrated by al-Nasa’i in his Sunan (Manasik al-Hajj, kayfa yuqabbil) and also mentioning that Tawus would pass by the Corner and not enter the fray if he saw it crowded but if he saw it deserted he would kiss the Stone thrice.

(iii) The report brought up in the question: Manbudh b. Abi Sulayman narrates from his mother that she was with `A’isha the Mother of the Believers (Allah be well-pleased with her and make her pleased) when one of her handmaidens came in to see her and said:

Mother of believers, I went around the Ka`bah seven times and touched the [Black Stone] Corner twice or thrice!. `A’ishah (Radiyallahu `anha) replied: May Allah not reward you! May Allah not reward you! You shoved your way through the men? Could you not have said ‘Allahu akbar’ and kept going? Al-Shafi`i, al-Umm and al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-Sunan (Hajj, al-Istilam fil-ziham); al-Rafi`i, Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi`i (2:326-327); Ibn al-Athir, al-Shafi (3:474-475); Banna al-Sa`ati, Bada’i` al-Minan (1:355).

There is a fourth related narration in Kitab al-Umm and al-Bayhaqi’s Ma`rifat al-Sunan:

(iv) Fom `Aisha bint Sa`d b. Abi Waqqas (Allah be well-pleased with them and make them pleased): “My father used to say to us: ‘If you women find a gap among the people then touch [the Corner] but otherwise say Allahu akbar and keep going.'” Al-Shafi`i, al-Umm and al-Bayhaqi, Ma`rifat al-Sunan (Hajj, al-Istilam fil-ziham).

Imam al-Rafi`i al-Kabir (Allah have mercy on him) said in his Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi`i (2:329):

One is commanded to touch [the Black Stone and Yemeni Corner] only if it is easy for them. However, when there is a crowd and the person will either harm others or be harmed by struggling to touch then he or she is not commanded to do it. It is narrated that he – upon him blessings and peace – said to `Abd al-Rahman [b. `Awf]: “And what did you do, Aba Muhammad, in relation to touching the Black Corner?” `Abd al-Rahman replied: “I touched it and I left it.” The Prophet said: “You hit the mark” [Muwatta’, Sahih Ibn Hibban, Mustadrak al-Hakim, Sunan al-Bayhaqi]. Al-Shafi`i said: “He means I touched it in the absence of a crowd and I left it when crowded.” It is also narrated that he – upon him blessings and peace – said to `Umar, Allah be well-pleased with him: “O Aba Hafs, you are big and strong so do not crowd others…” etc. Conforming to this instruction are the two reports from Ibn `Abbas and `A’isha, Allah be well-pleased with them.

Similarly Ibn al-Athir al-Jazari (Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Shafi fi Sharh Musnad Al-Shafi`i (3:474-475):

Al-Shafi`i’s (Allah be well-pleased with him) position is that when the person making circumambulation is unable to kiss the Black Stone and touch it due to the crowding of people around it, he or she just signals to it with his or her hand and moves on…. The hadith of `A’isha was conveyed to make clear that it is desirable for women to make circumambulation from behind the men so as not to intermix with them. It also makes clear that whoever finds a crowd around the House, it is enough for them to circumambulate and signal to the Corner.

Similarly Shaykh Ahmad b. `Abd al-Rahman al-Banna al-Sa`ati (the father of Hasan al-Banna, Allah have mercy on them) said in his footnote to these reports in his Bada’i` al-Minan fi Jam` wa-Tartib Musnad Al-Shafi`i wal-Sunan (1:355): “It shows that what is required from a woman is not to touch when there is a crowd and suffice herself with making takbir while passing by the Black Stone except if there is no crowd around it, in which case she can touch it.” He then mentions the report from `Aisha bint Sa`d. And Allah knows best.

prayers while travelling

Question:

Asalkium dear staff may ALLAH most high reward you in this life and hereafter inshALLAH.

I was just wondering when a person is travelling for example away from home for like 15-20 days or more what is the prayers that have to offered.

do we pray normal five prayers or do we pray the five prayers but shorter,
please advise me for all five prayers.

walkium asalam.
sincere regards

Answer:

wa `alaykum salam,

Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem

While you are travelling, it is permissible for you to shorten your prayers. You allowed to shorten  Zhuhr, `Asr and `Isha prayers from 4 raka`ats to 2 raka`ats. As for Fajr and Maghrib prayers the raka`ats performed remain the same.

Upon reaching your destination, you have to revert back praying 4 raka`ats for Zhuhr, `Asr and `Isha if you are staying in one place for 15 to 20 days as you are considered as one of the residents.

Dream: Black dog in garden and baby cousin

Dream:

Assalaamu Alaikum and thank your for this service. I saw two dreams on different days:
1. Me and my father wanted to go out of our house via the backdoor, that allows you to enter the garden. But when I saw a black dog approaching us and trying to get in the house via the backdoor, I got a bit scared and closed the door quickly and secured it from the inside so the black dog could not enter. The dog did not bark. My brother was in the garden on his bicycle and didn’t seem to be afraid of the black dog,
which surprised me.
2.I dreamt my baby female cousin and her mother. Her mother was in my bedroom and standing next to me. I was holding the baby and putting it gently on my bed. I put a white pillow under the baby’s head

Interpretation:

a`udhu billah mina ‘sh-shaytani ‘r-rajeem
Bismillahi ‘r-Rahmani ‘r-Raheem

The second dream is a very good tiding for you and your cousin.  In sha Allah the baby will live in comfort and purity supported by angelic lights.

In the first dream, the black dog is an enemy preventing you from reaching the garden, Jannah.  Shaytan is always lying in wait for believers to prevent them from goodness.  Alhamdulillah your brother in his innocence was protected.  The house here is also showing your spiritual heart (per the hadith, “The heart of the believer is the house of the Lord”).  Close the door on shaytan’s gossips and whisperings and be in safety.  Also approach the Muhammadan Heart through the door of Allah’s awliya.

{It is no virtue if you enter your houses from the back: It is virtue if you fear Allah. Enter houses through the proper doors: And fear Allah so that you may prosper.} (Baqara 2:189)
