Figurative Language in the Quran

Question:

Dear Shaykh Gibril,

Assalamu alaikum.

1. Are the verses below, examples of metonymy in the Quran?

a. “Help God, He will help you” (47:7)
b. “Verily those who har God” (33:57)
c. “…those who wage war against God” (9:107)

2. What is the Arabic word for metonymy?

JazakAllah khair

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

It is definitely called majaz, i.e. figurative or metaphorical, and possibly majaz al-naqs or elliptic metaphor because it presupposes a missing word in each case, as shown in the commentaries, for example al-Baydawi:

a. “If you support the Religion of Allah and His Prophet”

c. Those who wage war against the Awliya of Allah and His Messenger.

As for b. al-Baydawi said that Allah was mentioned out of magnification for the Prophet, since the full verse states: {Verily those who harm Allah and His Messenger} (33:57). In the case of Allah of course it is definitely majaz just as in c. as stated by al-Jassas in Ahkam al-Qur’an (chapter on Hadd al-Muharibin) “since it is impossible that Allah be fought” and similarly it is impossible that He be harmed.

Metonymy in Arabic is majaz tasmiya.

Metonymy is a figure of speech in which the name of one thing is used in place of that of another associated with or suggested by it, e.g. “Dar” (house) for “tribe”.

Dream: Men burning after shaking hand with wali

Dream:

Assalamo alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

I was walking behind some Wali Allah and two people came to shake his hand but got burnt but one was revived again as handsome man. I think it was Ghoas e Azam Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani but my aunt said that it might be “Makhdoom-ul-Alam Hazrat Alauddin Ali Ahmed Kaliyari (Sabir Kaliyari)” because he had power to burn people, can you tell who he was?

Interpretation:

wa `alaykum salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh,

It means the power of the wali to purify the people who take his hand (baya`). He burns their bad deeds just as the Fire of Hell will, and purifies them. Some survive and get transformed, coming out as a wali too, while others cannot be transformed but are only purified. For that reason when people take baya` their lives are usually turned upside-down because the wali will purify his murid in this life, which is far preferred to purification in the grave or worse, in the Fire. As to who you saw, your heart will tell you.

And Allah knows best.

Latest posts

Question:

Assalamu alaykum

Please forgive my bad adab.

I would like to request you to please redesign the eshaykh.com website with specific reference to Latest posts. I always go to Latest posts when I go to the site. If I didn’t go to the site for a few days I would miss a lot of Latest posts as only to latest 20 posts are displayed. It would be most convenient if Latest posts are displayed in chronological order with no limit. In addition, if you could add a functionality where those posts that I have read already is marked as such.

I hope I am not asking too much.

Shukran and was salaam.

Answer:

wa ‘`alaykum salam,

We will discuss with our technical staff and see if this can be done.

Prayer Request: Timid Heart

Request:

Assalamo alaikum,

I am 26 years of age. Since the last couple of years I have been having symptoms with like throbbing heart, timidity and shake of the confidence. Salaat does help me but all this stays temporal and I feel worst after Maghrib till Isha. I am not drawing a pattern over here but this is what I feel like. I often have severe mood swings and may have a medical condition.
I with great reverence request Mawalana extending his prayers for me for stability in life, peace at heart and good health.

May Allah Bless us all!

Dream: Gas leak catching fires

Dream:

Asalamu Aleikum,

I’ve seen few dreams where in the gas furnace gets broken and leaks gas and sometimes it catches a small fire and in my dreams I keep trying to fix it before it catches fire or cause a explosions in my house. At the end it does get better and nothing major happens..

I’m not sure if this is related to my dreams or not but since few days I’ve started smelling cigarette or minty smell in my room while no one in my family smokes.

JazakAllahu Khairan

Interpretation:

wa `alaykum salam,

Shaytan is trying to break down your heart, and make you leave prayers and `ibadah, but due to support of awliyaullah he is not able to succeed. That is the smell of awliyaullah visiting you, to let you know they are protecting you aggressively, as the Prophet (s) is hareesun `alaykum, never letting shaytan to harm you. And Allah knows best.

Sheikh Gibril Hadad

Question:

Asalamu alaykum sheikh Gibril Hadad.

I am speaking on behalf of my brother who is a true Sufi. As we are baith on another Naqshbandi chain, alhamdulilah. We are all one. Basically sheikh my brother has seen many dreams of a sheikh who he must learn zahiri and batini knowledge and will be the teacher…When he saw your picture he said that looks like that teacher he saw in the dream. Could I have a direct email of yours to discus the mater in detail?

Answer:

Alaykum Salam,

Your brother needs a living shaykh of irshad and guidance, and my best advice for him in order to progress is to make bayaa to Mawlana Shaykh Nazim al-Haqqani which he can do online.
